background

Gelephu Thromde is a town in the Sarpang Dzongkhag in southern Bhutan, it dates back to 1960s, when the primitive settlement was shifted from the MouChhu banks to the present area. It was declared as Class-A Thromde in the year 2011 with six Demkhongs and a population of 12072 and 2847 households (Thromde Survey 2020) covering 11.52 sq Km. Principally the Thromde Administration broadly functions with eight main divisions/sectors namely the Development Regulatory Division, Infrastructure Division, Urban Planning Division, Environment Division, Land Record and Survey Division, Finance Division, Education Sector, and Secretariats Services.

Gelephu, due to various factors, has prospered and developed as a market town serving the hinterland. It is the fastest-growing town with an annual growth rate of 5.5 percent. It was envisioned to be a regional growth center with special economic activities and a recreational hub with ample inter-linked green open spaces for use as recreation, sports, walking, cycling, exercising and play gardens that can provide an excellent opportunity to promote planned growth of Gelephu unlike many other settlements. The Structure Plan envisions an impressive entrance or a Gateway into Gelephu through a portal from India and an International Airport. It is proposed to be a multi-modal terminal heading Trongsa to the North, Sarpang, and Damphu to the West, and by improving connectivity, the Panbang Highway plays a vital role in the broader regional development of Gelephu with Eastern Dzongkhags. The proposed Sarpang – Gelephu development corridor will serve as the backbone for a Special Economic Zone. It proposes the establishment of a Dry Port and a Free Trade Zone as a part of the Special Economic Zone.
